Written Summary   Table One   Table Two   Graphs
Notes:
1. Mean daily temperature and pressure are averaged from the standard 24 hourly observations and not as the average of the maximum and minimum values.
2. Precipitation day has = or >0.01". Trace amounts (< 0.01") are not included in data.
3. Departures from the normal are based on the 1971 to 2000 normals where available (with the exception of the Sea Surface Temperature, which is based on the 1985 to 2000 normal).
Notes:
1. Mean humidity is averaged from the standard 24 hourly observations.
2. Weather Notes indicate a specific condition was observed at least once that day.
3. Departures from the normal are based on the 1971 to 2000 normals where available (with the exception of the Sea Surface Temperature, which is based on the 1985 to 2000 normal).
Key:
PN = Precipitation, PC = Partly Cloudy, MC = Mostly Cloudy, OV = Overcast, DZ = Drizzle, SH = Showers, BS = Blowing Spray GR = Hail, FC = Funnel Cloud, HZ = Haze, RA = Rain, BR = Mist, TS = Thunder Storm/Shower

During the late afternoon of Wednesday the 1st, a low pressure centre passed to the near south, bringing 0.79" of rain and 2.8 hours of sunshine. The high was 83F/28C before the rain set in, cooling temperatures to 71F/22C. Then, despite a complex low well to the north on the 2nd and 3rd, a drying trend developed on moderate west winds, with just a trace of rain on the 2nd. There were 10.4 and 10.5 hours of sunshine respectively, and temperatures peaked at 85F/29C on the 2nd with a low of 73F/23C, also on the 2nd. After an overnight trace of rain, the 4th brought mainly fair and dry weather with 9.8 hours of sunshine, as a weak ridge built across the area from the west. The high reached 83F/28C after a low of 74F/23C. Light winds and plenty of sunshine dominated Sunday the 5th as weak high pressure remained in control. The high was 84F/29C with a low of 73F/23C and 10.8 hours of sunshine. Monday the 6th saw an increase in clouds as a cold front stalled to the near west. The high was 85F/29C with a low of 76F/24C and 8.6 hours of sunshine. Weak ridging and developing col conditions then influenced the area on the 7th and 8th. Mainly fair conditions with light winds ensued both days, with 9.3 hours of sunshine and 0.01" of rainfall on the 7th. 8 hours of sun shone on the 8th with no measurable rain. Highs peaked at 86F/30C on the 7th and fell to a low of 74F/24C on the same day. High pressure continued to dominate on the 9th with 7.4 hours of sunshine. the high was 84F/29C with a low of 74F/23C. The 10th saw a couple of showers as a trough moved across the area, with 0.27" of precipitation and 7.2 hours of sunshine. The high was 84F/29C with a low of 73F/23C. The 11th saw a high of 81F/28C and a low of 72F/22C and just 2 hours of sun, as Tropical Storm Fay made a slow approach from the south. There was 1.21" of rain and winds became strong during the day with gale-force gusts by nightfall. By the early-morning hours of Sunday the 12th the centre of TS Fay, holding on a northward motion, passed nearly directly over Bermuda. Easterly gales ahead of the storm briefly eased to under 10kts and then backed westerly, increasing for an hour to a peak 53kts gusting 71kts at the airport with higher recorded velocities around the Island. The high reached 83F/28C with a low of 72F/22C and 0.66" of rain recorded with early thunder and a late 3.7 hours of sun. Monday, October 13th, was breezy with settled conditions as high pressure strengthened from the north. The high was 80F/26.5C with a low of 73F/23C and 8.7 hours of sunshine. Tuesday the 14th continued to be influenced by high pressure as increasing clouds brought a few showers. The high was 82F/28C with a low of 72F/22C and 7.5 hours of sunshine. Breezy conditions continued on the 14th and 15th as Hurricane Gonzalo to our southwest became a Category 4 and began its re-curvature to the north-northeast under the influence of an upper trough. Mainly fair weather remained over Bermuda with 7.0-7.6 hours of sunshine, a high of 82F/28C on both days, a low of 71F/22C on the 15th and 75F/24C on the 16th with a trace of precipitation both days. Hurricane Gonzalo then made its final approach to the Island on the 17th, with winds increasing hurricane force during the afternoon, and continuing well into the night, with a brief lull in the evening as the eye went across the Island. Preliminary data suggests 2.47" of rain fell, although the real total is likely to be more due to the strength of the winds. Temperatures peaked at 80F/27C and winds reached as high as 81 knots with a gust to 98 knots as the back eyewall of Gonzalo moved across the area (wind figures are based on the Causeway due to equipment outages). The highest gust recorded was at the St David's AWOS station where a gust of 125 knots (144mph) was recorded. There was no evidence of tornadic activity, with all winds being straight-line winds. Saturday the 18th saw conditions settle after Gonzalo quickly moved away from the area. Mainly fair conditions with 6.9 hours of sunshine with 0.38" of rainfall. The high was 83F/28C with a low of 71F/22C. High pressure built in behind Gonzalo on the 19th, with a brief late shower producing 0.04" of precipitation. The high was 81F/27C with a low of 71F/21C and 9.4 hours of sunshine. The 20th saw 10.3 hours of sunshine with high pressure and few clouds. The high was 80F/27C with a low of 70F/21C. The 21st saw another fair-weather day with 9.3 hours of sunshine, a high of 79F/26C and a low of 69F/20C. A continental low well to the north swung a frontal trough toward Bermuda on the 22nd with 0.05" in afternoon and evening showers, a high of 79F/26C, a low of 73F/23C and just 0.7 hours of sun. A cold front slowed as it passed through the area on Thursday the 23rd. As the front slowed it brought 0.65" of precipitation through the morning and into the early afternoon. Skies remained overcast even after the rain ended giving 0.0 hours of sunshine and a high of 76F/24.5C with a low of 69F/21C. Friday the 24th was settled and breezy with plenty of sunshine. The high was 80F/27C with a low of 71F/22C and 9.6 hours of sunshine.
